Prepare Your Yard for Fall

As we move towards the fall, and closer to winter, now is the time to get a start on winterizing your yard. There always seems to be a lot to do, between raking up leaves (yes, that time is almost among us), plowing the garden, and wrapping the bushes before the snow crushes them.

**Make a note, secondary water will turned off in Davis and Weber counties on October 1, 2014.**

Lawn care is important during this time and fall fertilization is crucial to giving your lawn the nutrients it needs. According to the experts at Lowes, heavy fertilization is recommended in the autumn. For a full list of fertilizing tips, check out this great insights on lawn care (http://www.weberbasin.com/).

It is also important to begin to winterize your sprinkler system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib1KC4xBAk8) during this time. Living in a climate with cold temperatures, you will want to take the time to drain the values and blow out any excess water to prevent your pipes from cracking.

If you own a swimming pool or spa, you will want to prepare to close them for the winter months. In most cases you will probably want to keep your spa open, there is something beautiful about sitting in a hot tub amongst the snow, but it is still good to make sure your spa is working properly.

As for a swimming pool, it is important to make sure the pool is drained (though not all the way) and that all the pipes are drained of water. It is also important that all your pool is clean and the chemicals are exact for an easier Spring opening. I can tell you from personal experience, it isn’t very fun to open your pool to a healthy growth of algae.

Whatever you own, be sure to talk with a local pool professional if you have any doubts or questions on what to do. If you make a mistake while winterizing your pool or spa, it can be costly so make sure you do it right.

What are some things you do in the fall to prepare for the winter months?
