Growing Your Perfect Herb Garden

Personally, there is something charming about an herb garden. The fresh scent of lavender around the home is relaxing. When planning out your herb garden, choose a sunny area with loose, permanent soil and build it up in the design of a spiral of rocks and soil. The stones which enclose the herbs warm and humidify the soil which allows a wide variety of herbs to grow.

Maintain your herb garden by giving the herbs a small amount of water (they don’t need a lot to thrive). Make sure the water is able to run off through a drainage layer of gravel or topsoil and regularly turn the soil between the herbs to stop the water from running off before it has a chance to sink in.

Gardeners tip: only use natural fertilizer with an herb bed (such as a little compost). Too much fertilizer will take away from the flavor of your herbs.

When harvesting your herbs, the best time to collect your herbs and seeds is in the late morning or at midday (with the exception of roots which are best if picked in the early morning). Not including lavender, thyme, and oregano, the perfect time to pick herbs is before they bloom or else you risk losing the flavor.

What is your favorite herb to cook with?
