Writing is a
wonderful and frustrating process. Trying to create something you hope others will find interesting and, as I have found out, the secret is to write what interests you. How are you going to draw your reader in if you have no interest in the topic?
We all have
stories to tell, ideas we want to share with others—but how do you get your
ideas down? How do you become the writer
you always wanted to be? One of my tips,
along with numerous others, is to write
every day. This is not always the easiest thing to do, especially on those
days you feel blocked, but you have practice due diligence. To quote the great
Maya Angelou:
What I try to do is write. I may write
for two weeks ‘the cat sat on the mat,
that is that,
not a rat,’... And it might be just the most boring and awful stuff.
But I try. When
I’m writing, I write. And then it’s as if the muse is convinced
that I’m
serious and says, ‘Okay. Okay. I’ll come.
That is the writing process.
You put pen to paper and allow the words—good or bad—to come out. As a writer
you are never going to be completely satisfied with your work, there will
always been things to rework, to throw out and try again.
Have the courage
to start, find your inspiration, be open to receiving feedback (be sure to give your work to
encouraging, yet honest friend) and never give up. Write your story, one word
at a time.
